Item writers and reviewers, we thank you!
A team of dedicated American Board of Optometry Diplomates converged on Phoenix August 15-17, 2014, to create the questions for our January 2015 Board Certification exam. Diplomates represented a wide range of practices and areas of expertise, helping to ensure an exam that is fair, balanced, and relevant to patient care trends.
Our item writers and reviewers spent three days crafting exam questions to challenge future Diplomates and help them hone their professional skills. Special thanks to Prometric Testing Centers staff, and our band of knowledgeable ODs who took time out from busy practices to support the future of optometry. Our team of writers and reviewers flew and drove in from many states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Their geographical diversity helped ensure that a wide range of diagnostic and treatment issues would be addressed by the exam.
The item writing event was successful and productive, and American Board of Optometry chairman James Vaught even celebrated his birthday during the proceedings.
We were gratified to receive a very large number of replies to our request for item writers. Although we weren’t able to include all who expressed interest, we appreciate the enthusiastic response, and will keep our Diplomates apprised of future authoring sessions. (Item writing is an excellent educational opportunity in itself – participants receive Maintenance of Certification credit for their efforts.)
